After "The Death of God": who will protect truth from power?
Thomas Kauakas "Appearance, truth and reality after the death of God". Nihilism in the shadows' post-hierarchical analysis

In Tomas Kiauka's article Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy and Giorgio de Chirico's metaphysical painting is associated with the post-truth of the present, experience of post-reality and nihilism. "God's death" here does not mean alone weakening of religious faith. It represents the metaphysical world, supreme instances of truth and immutable hierarchies of values collapse. When the otherworldly basis of reality is gone, the world appears as an appearance, a stage and a mask, and the person remains to create his own life meaning.
Kauka examines this break through the mystery of de Chirico's painting and melancholy. After the end of metaphysics, art becomes more than just one culture areas, but in a way to keep life bearable, to see the world as an enigma and prevent visibility from descending into banality. But at the end of the article the aesthetic response confronts the political reality: values are revalued those with power, idolized characters take over the screens, and the global the performance seems to have no exit.
This is a strong current diagnosis. A though allows one to question its implied alternative: or guarantees the truth transcendent authority, or only competing apparitions remain and will to power. There is a third way. Truth may not be hierarchical guaranteed and not individually chosen, but . After the "death of God", humanity does not need a new infallible authority, but such an architecture of cognition and decision-making, in which no one power center could not usurp the right to determine reality.
Article and its context
The text of the shell was published at the beginning of 2026, when the concepts "post-truth", "post-reality" and "alternative facts" have been around for a long time no longer describes the purely theoretical debates of postmodernism. Generative artificial intelligence, synthetic images, algorithmically personalized information media, political performance and the social media economy is increasingly disrupting the shared experience of reality. A person is not faced with a lack of information, but with such an excess of it, in which the production of appearance becomes cheaper and faster than it inspection.
In this context, Nietzsche and de Chirico's Screams are not alone figures of philosophy and art history. Nietzsche becomes a thinker, who diagnosed the collapse of Western metaphysical supports, while de Chirico an artist who learned to depict the world as a mysterious phenomenon, for which there is no other, more "real" world. Their questions, the author in my opinion, not outdated, but fulfilled.
The structure of the article moves from Nietzsche's life and the Apollonian one and the Dionysian initial tension at the "death of God", then - at de Chirico's paintings, their deconstructed perspective, frozen time and inexplicable mystery. At the end, the aesthetic analysis returns to the political the present. Visibility no longer only opens the mystery of being - it becomes a performance mass-produced and adapted to the interests of power.
What does Kiauka see exactly
"God's death' is an event of responsibility, not merely an event of loss
Kauka rightly points out that Nietzsche's metaphor is not simple slogan of atheism. "The death of God" means the destruction of the horizon: man can no longer easily transfer responsibility for truth, meaning and values to higher authority. If there is no more infallible foundation, we have ourselves to answer what we rely on and how we live.
This insight is important for posthierarchy. Hierarchy often justifies itself higher authority: God, tradition, ruler, party, history by law, nation, expert institution or technological inevitability. When such legitimation crumbles, it is not enough to declare freedom. It is necessary to take responsibility for the procedures by which the common world will be familiar and manageable.
There is no visibility the simple opposite of reality
De Chirico's interpretation is strong in that it does not return us to a naive scheme of two worlds: here - a deceptive exterior, somewhere beyond - the real point. There is no secret hidden in De Chirico's paintings an answer that just needs to be deciphered. It appears in the very things in visibility, in their strange neighborhood, in mismatched perspectives, in shadows stronger than objects and frozen time.
This is an important caveat to rationalist judgment. Not the whole reality can be reduced to data, explanations and unambiguous conclusions. Art preserves what can be shown but not fully explained. A post-hierarchical culture should not make a collective assessment of everyone by averaging the meanings. Riddle, ambiguity and individual experience yes are also parts of cultural reality.
Art can restore the intensity of reality
After the end of metaphysics, art in Kiauka's text becomes a way to escape significance of the world. If appearance is the only one available to us world, art can show it not as a flat surface, but as inexhaustible and disturbing reality. De Chirico's paintings do not return of the transcendental world, but returns wonder, mystery and the question
It is a significant counterweight to the technological culture of the present, which creates an image usually treated as an attention-grabbing signal. The artistic image is not just passing the message. It can slow down the reaction, stop it auto-recognition and make you see again what it looked like it goes without saying.
Post-truth is power problem
Kiauka's most important political insight appears at the end of the article: the revaluation of values takes place according to the needs of those who dictate the rules and interests. Hence, post-truth is not mere philosophical doubt objectivity. It is an architecture of power.
Not every appearance has the same opportunity to reach an audience. Screens, algorithms, broadcast infrastructure and public agenda controlled by specific characters. When the general instance of truth weakens, the vacuum is not filled by a free variety of equivalent interpretations, but by those who have the most resources to make their interpretation dominant.
From this point of view, nihilism and hierarchy are not opposites. Hierarchy can thrive in conditions of nihilism because there are no longer common criteria for truth power itself begins to act as the source of truth.
Where is Kiauka's diagnosis need to be supplemented
The highest the absence of an instance of truth does not mean the absence of truth
The article moves from the absence of God and the metaphysical world to of the statement that there is no single truth and no supreme truth authorities that can approve it. But these things are necessary to assign
The guarantor of truth and the criteria of truth are not the same. For that we would determine whether water boils at a certain temperature or a drug effective, whether the document is forged, there is no need for transcendental authority. We need a reality that opposes our wishes, and a public one methods for verifying statements.
The loss of metaphysical infallibility nullifies the ultimate guarantee, but not the actual difference between a more accurate statement and a more false statement. We can everyone makes mistakes and not all conclusions are equal anyway. The truth becomes no less important and more demanding: it can no longer be simply published on behalf of the highest authority.
Nietzsche diagnosed the crisis rather than creating it
Kauka portrays Nietzsche as dynamite that blew up the old ones world structures. It's an effective metaphor, but it risks giving too much causal power for the philosopher. Nietzsche did not create secularization, modern science, capitalism, mass politics or technological media systems. He radically named the process which already happened
The relationship of his philosophy to the catastrophes of the 20th and 21st centuries as well is not unidirectional. "Will to power", the superman and the revaluation of values can be dangerously appropriated by hierarchical ideologies but Nietzsche's criticism simultaneously destroys their claims to the metaphysical legality. Therefore, it is more important to ask whether Nietzsche is guilty of nihilism, and what social order fills the semantic vacuum he diagnoses.
Art can help survive nihilism, but cannot alone organize the common of the world
Turning life into a work of art gives individual existence creative response. However, aesthetic self-creation does not guarantee that they are different the lives created by people will be able to coexist peacefully and justly. One one person's "work of art" can become the scene of another person's enslavement.
Art can unlock the mystery, restore sensitivity and protect against platitudes. However, public life also needs common facts, universal ones principles, responsibilities and decisions. There must be an aesthetic response supplemented by cognitive and decision architecture.
"The world without alternatives' is not a metaphysical necessity
At the end of Kauka's article, the global performance appears as a theater from which there is no exit because there is no other world. But here it is important not to confuse the transcendental alternative with the social one an alternative.
We don't need the media, politics or the economy to change the order escape to another metaphysical world. Need to create in this world a different structure of human interaction. If the current scene has no exit, it is not possible to change the world, but the architecture of the stage, the distribution of roles and rules by which some gain the right to speak for all.
Post-hierarchical answer: truth without an infallible owner of truth
In hierarchical systems, truth usually comes down from the top. Her announced by the ruler, clergy, party leadership, editorial staff, experts commission or platform algorithm. A nihilistic response to such authority exposes, but often leaves only a struggle of interpretations. Then you win not the most reasonable interpretation but the one with the most power and visibility.
Posthierarchy offers a third model: truth belongs to no one person or institution, but statements are not left arbitrary for competition. They are tested in a structured manner by many competent in the interaction of the participants.
This would mean:
- evaluate the statement separately from the status of the person who made it;
- apply as much as possible so that the name is institutional authority would not change the argument;
- before presenting your conclusion, familiarize yourself with the arguments of others and them to evaluate;
- include competences and experience in different fields;
- record not only the opinion of the majority, but unity, and uncertainty;
- to accumulate based on the value of previous deposits, not according to duties;
- leave the opportunity to revise the decision as new ones arise to the facts.
In such a system, no one becomes an infallible instance of truth. However, this does not mean that everything is just appearances. Collective checking allows to reduce individual errors, influence of interests and the limitations of one perspective.
The truth here is not understood as the result of voting. Most can to be wrong The purpose of is not to count beliefs, but to organize the interaction in such a way that stronger arguments, more important facts and better solutions would have a better chance of emerging.
Not for all truths require the same procedure
Empirical reality, philosophical truth, and values meet in the text of Kauka and aesthetic experience. Post-hierarchical analysis must not shake them.
Factual statements
They are verified by evidence, sources, observations and repeatable methods. The collective procedure here helps to detect errors, biases and manipulation.
Normative decisions
They cannot be derived from facts alone. Values must be clearly stated, interests and possible consequences. Competent people are also necessary in this area the work of the participants, and the choice of those affected by the decision.
Existential and aesthetic experiences
They cannot be approved by vote. De Chirico's painting the mystery does not have to turn into one collective interpretation. Here the purpose of post-hierarchy is not to eliminate the multitude of interpretations, but to create conditions for them to meet without establishing a privileged one meaning.
So the collective intelligence is not a universal machine that produces final answers. He must respect the line between what is possible check what needs to be decided and what can only be shown and experienced
How post-hierarchy would deal with post-truth issues
When dealing with issues of public importance, post-hierarchical the decision would take place in two stages.
In the first stage, experts and competent participants would gather facts, would check sources, reveal uncertainties, suggest alternatives and assess the possible consequences. Their work would not take place as closed commissions judgment but as a transparent process of collective intelligence in which the value of the arguments is separated as much as possible from the status of the authors.
In the second stage, the interested people are those who are affected by the decision will directly affect, - would choose from competently prepared alternatives. They wouldn't pretend to be a substitute for expertise, but they wouldn't acquire expertise either rights alone determine society's goals.
This model would allow us to distinguish three things that posttruths the performance shakes: what is factually based, what are the alternatives possible and which of them is considered the most acceptable by the society.
From appearance theater to the general investigation of reality
Kauka rightly sees that after the "Death of God" he occupied an empty stage not a free and mature person, but often power-obsessed characters. They they do not discover the truth - they produce appearances and manage its dissemination means. However, it does not follow that we should long for one the highest authority that would re-establish the order of the world.
The problem is not the loss of the center of truth. The problem is that we didn't distributed truth-checking systems that can operate without a center.
Science has already shown that statements can be tested without fail scientist. His power lies not in individual genius alone, but in public genius method, criticism, repeatability and the ability to correct the previous one conclusion. A post-hierarchical collective intelligence could this principle extend to public decision-making, consideration of values and common life organization.
Art also remains essential in this process. He reminds that reality is not just a collection of facts, and man is not just rational data appraiser. The mystery of De Chirico's paintings protects the world from complete instrumentalization. But art and collective intelligence do different, complementary functions: art reopens the question, and collective intelligence helps prevent the answer from being hijacked power.
After the "death of God", the truth no longer has a single transcendent guarantor. But it may have social security procedures that don't allow it no human, institution or algorithm to become the new God.
Nihilism begins when there is no supreme authority and we decide that therefore everything is equally false. Posthierarchy begins when we realize: no one has the ultimate truth, therefore we must learn to check it together.
